A museum where you can encounter countless treasures while gazing at the sea.
This private art museum overlooks Sagami Bay from a hilltop in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Based on the collection of its founder, Mokichi Okada, it exhibits works including national treasures, important cultural properties, and important works of art. It is known for its space that blends nature and architecture, such as the circulation plan that takes advantage of the slope of the mountain from the entrance at the foot of the mountain to the main building, and the large observation lobby with huge glass windows that realize a panoramic view of the sea. In 2017, the interior space was renovated with the design of the New Material Laboratory by Hiroshi Sugimoto and Tomoyuki Sakakida, and it has been updated to an exhibition space that fuses traditional materials with modern design. Furthermore, in 2026, the "Garden with a View of the Sea" grand opened with the design supervision of landscape designer Paul Smither. This is an art museum that delivers the beauty of Japan amidst the beauty of nature while facing the changes of the times.
