Choi Hee-ju is a sewing artist based in Seoul, South Korea, who also works in Japan. She creates works using traditional Korean bojagi (patchwork fabric made by combining hemp and silk cloths), as well as small items and objects that are three-dimensional in shape with nature motifs. This particular piece is an amulet made from mosi, a traditional Korean hemp fabric, and is modeled after dried myeongtae (pollock), which is hung from high places in the entrances of homes, shops, and workplaces in Korea as a charm to ward off evil. "These lucky charms are based on fish and shellfish found all over the world. You can glimpse a part of the sea, life, and culture of that country from the story behind them.
