However, more than half of the oxygen on Earth is produced by organisms living in the ocean, such as phytoplankton and seaweed.

Just like land plants, marine life also uses sunlight to absorb carbon dioxide and perform "photosynthesis" to create nutrients.
During that process, a large amount of oxygen, which is essential for us, is released.

Carbon dioxide absorbed by seaweed and other organisms in the ocean and accumulated on the seabed is called "blue carbon," and it is expected to play a role in preventing global warming. For example, seaweed beds, such as those of kelp, are said to absorb 3 to 5 times more carbon dioxide than cedar trees.
