A manga that connects the seas, born from discussions.
This booklet project isKyoto International Manga Museum、Kitakyushu City Manga Museum、Koshi Manga MuseumThis idea was born from repeated discussions among the members of Minato Lab.
"What are the unique ways in which manga can depict the sea?" and "How can we connect with the sea through manga?" Bringing together their respective expertise and thoughts on their works, we deepened our discussion on the appeal of manga related to the sea.
Even within the broad category of "manga about the sea," there are a great many different ways of depicting it. While some depict the sea as a place of travel, adventure, and romance, others portray it as the familiar sea found in a home aquarium, the sea as a battlefield, or as a landscape that reflects the human heart. Through our discussions, we realized just how diverse the portrayal of the sea truly is in manga. And each participant realized that reading manga from the perspective of the sea can lead to discovering a new and different kind of enjoyment.
Connecting "the sea" and "manga" in reading is so much fun. I want to share that discovery and excitement with more people. I wonder if there's a way to convey its charm in a different form than the web museum exhibits.
It was with this in mind that we began creating this booklet. We wanted people to fully appreciate the charm of the works on a large page, so we made it a tabloid format, and to make it accessible to as many people as possible, we produced "50 Manga Connecting the Sea" as a free paper to be distributed free of charge.
This is a new endeavor that transcends the boundaries of digital and real-world media, aiming to further expand the appeal of both the sea and manga.
"Manga that Connects the Seas" will continue its discussions and dissemination efforts with the goal of selecting 100 works. We will continue to deliver the vastness and fascination of the sea, which can only be depicted through manga, in various forms.
